Have your mother do the cleaning and feeding since she is the one wanting another cat; the burden shouldn’t be placed on you alone. Share in the responsibility. There is no reason why a cat cannot be trained to learn house rules. Here we have two big scratching posts for them to use. And we train them from kittenhood to use them. If you wish for cats to be part of the household they should be taught house rules. They should be given toys to play with and posts to scratch on. And have their claws clipped regularly. I am acknowledged as the ultimate authority even as my wife is cruelly taken advantage of because she is soft with them, but as soon as I become involved order is brought to bear and everyone calms down – then usually sleeps off any resentment at being ordered to stand down. I have never hit or punished our cats in any way, and I like to think I am respected rather than feared. I like to lead rather than push so the father figure is the closest approximation I can see to our relationships.
