There’s the case of Morgan Freeman in Unforgiven. A role where skin colour was never mentioned, but due to Morgan Freeman being cast I always felt it very strange that no one in 1880’s Wyoming was referencing the character as being black, even as he was being tortured to death. I believe this is called colour-blind casting. The setting makes a big difference. This of course means that any production of Tolkien’s work could easily include black Men, Dwarves, Elves, or anything else and simply not mention it because such things aren’t really mentioned that much in Tolkien’s work. This is a good argument for doing this, because it would make absolutely no difference to the story based on the world and the setting. Some answers say things like “they are fictitious beings and can be whatever we want them to be”. I disagree as they are clearly well defined by Tolkien. I’m surprised that many big fans of Tolkien are saying this as well, knowing full well that Tolkien is describing how they look to us. Why not make Dwarves 7ft tall and make Hobbits orange? They are all fictitious. It’s only when it comes to sex and skin colour that people seem to lose their minds a bit. Does this mean I hate non white people and want all my movies to be dominated by white actors? Of course not. If you think that then you have a problem. Authenticity is the word. If a character is to be non white, then please do that. If a character belongs to a group described as white, then please do that. If a character is completely undefined and could be black or white or anything else, then pick the person for the role you think will really pull it off. There’s the case of Morgan Freeman in Unforgiven. A role where skin colour was never mentioned, but due to Morgan Freeman being cast I always felt it very strange that no one in 1880’s Wyoming was referencing the character as being black, even as he was being tortured to death. I believe this is called colour-blind casting. The setting makes a big difference. This of course means that any production of Tolkien’s work could easily include black Men, Dwarves, Elves, or anything else and simply not mention it because such things aren’t really mentioned that much in Tolkien’s work. This is a good argument for doing this, because it would make absolutely no difference to the story based on the world and the setting. True enough, but my objections really come from infecting Tolkien with modern movements to please some people for the sake of it, and by changing what he had specifically written making it less authentic. share the continent with humans (“Men”). Our Hobbit protagonist Frodo inherits a strange magical ring that turns you invisible when you wear it, but which also seems to have other and more sinister properties. The Wizard Gandalf is able to determine that this is the “One Ring of Power” wrought by the ancient demon Sauron, containing much of his essence. The Ring is a tool for world dominance, if one could access its full potential — but that also means being corrupted by its inherent evil. Sauron lost the Ring in a huge battle at the end of the previous Age of the world, but finally he has resurfaced and is building huge armies to once again make a bid for world dominion; he also knows that his Ring has been found and hopes to regain it, in which case his victory will be swift and complete. The “good” forces opposing him face the dilemma that only with the Ring can they hope to stand against Sauron with military might, but then whoever wields the Ring will just emerge as a new Dark Lord. But the near-indestructible Ring is also Sauron’s Achilles heel; its destruction would maim his very spirit and render him harmless forever.
