Find it for yourself. Its out there, but fortunately or unfortunately its up to you to source that material and bring it to the attention of your professors and peers. Find your community! And make work for yourself, first. Art and design school and the industry itself is still colonially informed; dont let that discourage younon-Eurocentric representation and work exists! KM: Take on as many opportunities that you can. Use that experience and amplify it through your work. Your story is unique to you and people will only listen if you can find the courage to speak and breathe life into your craft. Take your everyday experiences and find gold in the mundane. Seek counsel with a mentor and find your own path to what you want in this life.SQ: This next generation of designers is blessed with the amount of knowledge that was shared during this period. Some of the best experiences I had came from reaching out to other artists or potential mentors via email, mail, Instagram, etc. I would recommend: getting involved with as many passion activities as possible, and ask to volunteer or work in some capacity. Make your creating process accessible; its just as important as the product. Also, read as much as possibleespecially Fred Motens essays and Achille Mbembes Critique of Black Reason. Who are your inspirations? Are there specific architects, painters, etc., who have made a great impact on your work?MS: My inspirations are the writings of bell hooks, the storytelling of Carrie Mae Weems and Alice Munro, Gees Bend quilt makers, the Geometry of Xhosa beadwork, observing cultural differences between African and North American life.KM: My family is a big inspiration to me; they are fighters, creators, and survivors. They especially have a big impact on this project. Others that inspire me are costume designer Ruth E. Hall, director Ava Duvernay, singer Janelle Monae, along with writers Zora Neale Hurston, and Octavia Butler.SQ: Specific inspirations are tough, even the little encounters in a day are inspirational. James Baldwins words are always influential to me. Ive always gravitated towards the work of Pina Bausch, Crystal Pite and Emma Portner in dance theatre or performance since I was 16. But also, artists that work with light and color such as James Turrell, Olafur Eliasson or even photographer Zanele Muholi and textile artist Diedrick Brackens. They all heavily inspire me lately.
